AnAutieAuthor is the prolific writer known for crafting nail-biting psychological thrillers. Writing as both "M.A. Hunter" and under my own name "Stephen Edger", I believe my Autism and ADHD provides a unique lens through which I explore the complexities of the human psyche.

I have been a huge fan of books since I was a child. Every weekend, I would drag my mum to the library so I could borrow a fresh load of books to read. I've always had a visual imagination, so when I am reading, I'm not seeing words on a page, but I'm seeing the scenes play out in my head. And I really enjoyed witing stories in junior school, and m school reports always stated what a vivid imagination I had.

I first attempted to write a book when I was about 12, I think. I had no idea what to do, what plot and structure were, or anything about character development. 30 years later, I can't even remember what the story was about, but I do remember it lasted four double-sided A4 sheets (so, eight handwritten sheets). I also remember thinking how difficult it was and that what writers can do is so special and beyond my abilities.

My love of reading waned during secondary school, but came back with a vengeance after university. And after a terrifying burglary ordeal while on holiday in 2010, I couldn't stop thinking about how well that ordeal would translate into the opening of a crime thriller. At that point I still knew nothing about plotting, structure and character development. This led me to contact one of my favourite authors, Simon Kernick, and he was kind enough to respond and answer all my inane questions. I will forever be grateful to Simon for his support.

I was fortunate enough to work with some great editors and marketers at Bookouture who published my Detective Kate Matthews trilogy as "Stephen Edger" and I then released two books with HarperCollins' Killer Reads imprint. It was then that I signed a seven book deal with HarperCollins' One More Chapter imprint, and the "M.A. Hunter" pseudonym commenced. The six book Missing Children Case Files series was written in 13 months, during the various COVID lockdowns here in the UK, and Mummy's Little Secret was my first standalone psychological thriller.

I was thrilled to sign with agent Emily Glenister (at the DHH Literary Agency) in March 2022, and she helped me secure a contract with Boldwood Books that same year, and I am so thrilled to be continuing my writing journey with them. We've published eight standalone psychological thrillers together, and I have just signed a new contract for six more (as of July 2025).
